Derek Cormier, Growing Viking Fire Protection in New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island
From launching a new branch with a small team to leading a growing regional operation, Derek Cormier’s journey with Viking Fire Protection reflects resilience, learning, and strong leadership. As District Manager for the Moncton and Saint John offices in New Brunswick, Derek plays a key role in expanding Viking’s presence in the provinces while building teams grounded in trust and collaboration.
From New Brunswick Roots to National Experience
Originally from New Brunswick, Derek left the province to gain experience and develop his skills across Canada. His early career included learning the piping trade in British Columbia and working with a fire protection contractor in BC.
While these experiences shaped his work ethic and leadership approach, family remained central to his decisions.
“Family means everything. That was the whole reason why I wanted to come back to New Brunswick when my daughter was born.”
Joining Viking and Learning the Business from the Inside
Derek joined Viking Fire Protection after discovering an opportunity in Dartmouth. He grew through multiple departments, including inspection and service, gaining a deep understanding of operations. Mentored by Jesse Klups, Viking Fire Vice President, Derek learned the importance of leadership through action.
“I think that’s what I learned from Jesse a long time ago. Lead by example. I don’t want to just sit back and let the team do all the work. I want to be involved and support them.”
This mindset helped shape his approach as he moved into leadership roles, including Operations Manager in Dartmouth.
Building the Moncton Office from the Ground Up
In early 2024, Derek returned to New Brunswick to launch Viking’s Moncton office. Starting with a small team, he focused on relationships, consistency, and customer service.
“Starting a new branch, it’s not going to be perfect. You just go for it and learn from it. If you don’t try something, you’re not going to grow.”
That willingness to learn and adapt helped the Moncton operation gain traction through referrals and word of mouth, creating a strong foundation for growth.
Merging Operations and Leading Through Change
In early 2025, Derek was promoted to District Manager, overseeing the Moncton and Saint John offices. The role brought a significant increase in responsibility across both locations.
One of his priorities was aligning processes and expectations.
“My goal was to make the two offices cohesive, where everyone has their roles and responsibilities, and we work together regardless of location.”
A Leadership Style Built on Trust and Growth
Derek believes growth comes from learning, even when that includes making mistakes.
“One of my biggest strengths has been my willingness to take initiative and learn through experience, which has helped me grow and develop over time.”
Over time, his leadership evolved from being very hands-on to empowering teams to take ownership.
“The team shared that I’ve created more space for them to grow and take ownership, which shows that the operation is running better and that trust has been built.”
Respect, trust, and communication are at the core of his leadership philosophy.
“It comes back to mutual respect and trust. You have to give people the space to grow, while still being there to support them.”
Customer Relationships at the Core
For Derek, customer service is non-negotiable and a key driver of success.
“At the end of the day, if you don’t take care of the customers, the customers aren’t going to take care of you.”
In 2025, stabilizing operations while elevating customer service standards became a major focus.
“We’ve already had good feedback, and now we’re getting referrals. The word is spreading.”
That level of service starts in the field. Supporting field staff, recognizing their expertise, and valuing the work they do every day is essential to meeting client expectations. When everyone takes their role seriously and is equipped to succeed, clients feel the difference.
Looking Ahead in New Brunswick and PEI
Rather than setting rigid targets, Derek focuses on consistent effort and strong fundamentals.
“I want to see everyone coming in every day, working hard, responding to customers in a timely manner, and delivering good service. The results will speak for themselves.”
With strong teams, growing customer relationships, and deep roots in New Brunswick, Derek continues to help shape Viking Fire Protection’s future in the region.
