Warehousing & Distribution

Need help!

Warehouses and distribution facilities operate around the clock to receive, store, handle, and distribute goods. High storage racks, combustible packaging, loading docks, automated material handling equipment, and changing inventory profiles can create complex fire protection challenges. A fire can threaten employees, inventory, equipment, and buildings while disrupting supply chains and delaying deliveries.

Warehouse and Logistics Fire Risks

Warehousing and distribution facilities present specific fire hazards related to the type and quantity of stored goods, storage arrangements, material handling activities, and building infrastructure. Effective protection begins with understanding how these factors influence fire development and sprinkler system performance.

High-Piled Storage and Inventory Configurations

Warehouses frequently store large quantities of goods on pallet racks, shelving systems, and other storage arrangements. Storage height, aisle width, commodity classification, packaging materials, and rack configuration can significantly affect fire growth and sprinkler effectiveness.

Changes in inventory or storage layouts can also alter the facility’s fire protection requirements. Sprinkler systems must be engineered for the actual storage conditions, including the applicable commodity classification, storage height, and arrangement.

Combustible Packaging and Stored Materials

Cardboard cartons, plastic packaging, wooden pallets, and other combustible materials can contribute to rapid fire development. Certain commodities, particularly plastics and densely packed goods, may present additional challenges for fire suppression.

Proper hazard assessment and sprinkler system design are essential to account for the materials stored and the conditions in which they are kept.

Material Handling and Logistics Equipment

Forklifts, conveyors, automated storage and retrieval systems, charging stations, and other material handling equipment are integral to modern logistics operations. Electrical faults, battery charging activities, mechanical failures, and accidental impacts can introduce fire hazards or damage fire protection equipment.

Protection strategies must consider equipment locations, operational traffic, and access for inspection and maintenance.

Loading Docks and Distribution Operations

Loading docks and shipping areas experience frequent vehicle movements, temporary storage, and the transfer of goods between indoor and outdoor environments. These activities can introduce ignition sources, combustible materials, and potential damage to sprinkler piping or other fire protection components.

Fire protection systems must be suited to the facility’s layout and operating conditions while minimizing disruption to receiving and shipping activities.

Cold Storage and Freezer Facilities

Cold storage and freezer warehouses present additional challenges due to sub-zero temperatures, high-piled combustible storage, insulated panel construction, and refrigeration equipment.

Depending on the facility design and hazard assessment, preaction sprinkler systems, dry-pipe systems, specialized detection, and freeze-resistant components may be appropriate. The selected solution must account for temperature conditions, applicable codes, and the specific risks associated with the storage environment.

Fire Protection Solutions for Warehousing and Logistics Facilities

Warehouse Sprinkler Systems

Viking designs and installs sprinkler systems based on the facility’s storage arrangements, commodity hazards, building characteristics, and applicable requirements, including NFPA 13.

Depending on the application, solutions may include ceiling-level sprinklers, in-rack sprinklers, and specialized sprinkler arrangements for high-piled storage. Proper hydraulic calculations, sprinkler selection, and system layout are essential to address the specific fire hazards within the facility.

Fire Extinguishers

Portable fire extinguishers provide an important layer of protection for specific hazards throughout warehouse and logistics facilities. Selection, placement, and maintenance must follow applicable requirements, including NFPA 10, and account for the facility’s operations, equipment, and stored materials.

Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance

Warehouses can undergo frequent changes in inventory, rack layouts, storage heights, and material handling equipment. These changes can affect fire protection requirements and should be evaluated to determine whether the existing systems remain suitable.

Viking provides inspection, testing, and maintenance services to help identify deficiencies, verify system functionality, and support ongoing compliance. Regular assessment is especially important when storage configurations or operational conditions change.

Fire Detection and Alarm Systems

Early detection and effective notification are important in large warehouses, where high ceilings, extensive floor areas, and dense storage can affect fire detection strategies.

Viking provides fire alarm system installation, inspection, testing, and maintenance in accordance with applicable standards, including CAN/ULC-S524, CAN/ULC-S537, and CAN/ULC-S536.

As a premier distributor of NOTIFIER by Honeywell products in multiple regions across Canada, Viking offers addressable and conventional fire alarm systems, intelligent control panels, and integrated solutions suited to large and complex facilities.

Specialized Suppression Systems

Certain warehouse areas may require protection beyond standard sprinkler systems, depending on the hazards present. Electrical rooms, equipment spaces, battery charging areas, and other specialized locations may require additional assessment to determine the appropriate suppression approach.

Viking helps identify the fire protection requirements of these spaces and implement solutions suited to the equipment, materials, and operating conditions involved.
