Commercial

Need help!

Commercial buildings, including offices, retail stores, shopping centres, and mixed-use properties, bring together employees, customers, visitors, equipment, and essential building systems. From daily office operations to busy retail environments, these spaces require fire protection solutions that safeguard occupants, protect property, and help businesses maintain continuity.

Commercial Fire Risks

Commercial buildings face a range of fire hazards depending on their occupancy, equipment, building design, and daily activities. Effective fire protection requires systems that support early detection, occupant notification, and appropriate fire suppression.

Electrical and Mechanical Systems: Offices and retail properties depend on electrical infrastructure, lighting, HVAC equipment, computers, and other electronic devices. Electrical faults, overloaded circuits, and equipment malfunctions can create fire hazards. Mechanical rooms and building service areas also require appropriate fire protection based on their specific risks.

Office Environments and Occupant Safety: Office buildings often contain open workspaces, meeting rooms, server rooms, kitchens, and storage areas. Electrical equipment, combustible furnishings, paper products, and other everyday materials can contribute to fire development. Effective detection and alarm systems are essential to alert occupants and support safe evacuation.

Retail Spaces and Public Access: Retail stores and shopping centres combine public access with merchandise displays, stockrooms, electrical equipment, and storage areas. Seasonal displays, packaging, and changing merchandise layouts can introduce additional fire hazards. Fire protection systems must account for occupant traffic, the building’s configuration, and the specific risks associated with stored and displayed goods.

Building Operations and Business Continuity: Commercial properties rely on essential systems to support daily operations. A fire can damage equipment, disrupt services, affect tenants, and lead to costly interruptions. Properly designed and maintained fire protection systems help reduce potential damage and support a safer environment for employees, customers, and visitors.

Fire Protection Solutions for Commercial Buildings

Fire Sprinkler Systems: Viking designs and installs automatic sprinkler systems tailored to commercial building layouts, occupancy classifications, and applicable code requirements. Systems are designed in accordance with NFPA 13 and maintained in accordance with NFPA 25 to support effective fire control and continued system performance.

Fire Detection and Alarm Systems: Viking provides fire alarm system installation, inspection, testing, and maintenance in accordance with applicable standards, including CAN/ULC-S524 for installation, CAN/ULC-S537 for verification, and CAN/ULC-S536 for inspection and testing.

As a premier distributor of NOTIFIER by Honeywell products in multiple regions across Canada, Viking offers addressable and conventional fire alarm systems, intelligent control panels, and integrated solutions for commercial properties of varying sizes and complexity.

Fire Extinguishers and Specialized Suppression: Portable fire extinguishers must be selected, located, and maintained according to applicable requirements, including NFPA 10. Viking helps ensure that appropriate extinguishers are available for the hazards present throughout a facility.

Where specific hazards require additional protection, specialized suppression systems can be considered for areas such as electrical rooms, IT infrastructure, and other critical equipment spaces, subject to the applicable design requirements.

Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance: Regular inspection, testing, and maintenance help identify deficiencies, confirm system functionality, and support continued compliance with applicable requirements. Viking provides ongoing fire protection services to help commercial property owners and managers maintain their systems as buildings, tenants, and operational needs change.
