As transportation networks evolve with electrification, automation, and increasingly complex infrastructure, fire protection plays a critical role in protecting passengers, personnel, assets, and operations. From transit terminals and maintenance facilities to underground tunnels and rail systems, these environments face a range of fire hazards involving electrical equipment, vehicles, combustible materials, and mechanical systems. Effective fire detection, monitoring, and suppression strategies must be tailored to the specific risks and operational requirements of each facility.
Fire Risks Across Transportation Infrastructure
Terminals and Transit Stations: Transportation terminals and stations accommodate large numbers of passengers, electrical systems, commercial spaces, and essential building services. Fire incidents can disrupt operations, affect evacuation routes, and put public safety at risk. Early detection, effective alarm systems, and appropriate suppression solutions are essential to support timely emergency response.
Maintenance and Service Facilities: Maintenance facilities may involve vehicle servicing, electrical repairs, battery charging, fuel handling, and the storage of lubricants or other combustible materials. These activities can introduce risks such as electrical fires, flammable liquid fires, and thermal incidents involving batteries. Fire protection strategies should address the specific hazards associated with maintenance operations, equipment, and vehicle types.

Tunnels and Underground Transportation: Tunnels present distinct fire protection challenges due to confined spaces, limited access for emergency responders, and complex evacuation conditions. Smoke accumulation, restricted ventilation, and the difficulty of reaching an incident can complicate emergency response. Detection, alarm, ventilation coordination, and appropriate suppression systems are important considerations when protecting underground transportation infrastructure.
Electrical Systems and Electrification: Modern transportation infrastructure increasingly depends on electrical distribution systems, control equipment, communications networks, and vehicle charging infrastructure. Electrical faults, overheating, and battery-related incidents can create fire risks that require specialized detection and protection measures suited to the equipment and operating environment.
Automated and High-Traffic Operations: Automated transportation systems rely on sensors, communication networks, control systems, and interconnected equipment. Fire protection must account for these critical components while supporting passenger safety, coordinated emergency response, and continuity of operations in busy, constantly changing environments.
Tailored Fire Protection for Transportation Facilities
Viking Fire Protection provides fire detection, monitoring, and suppression solutions for transportation facilities and infrastructure. Our approach considers the hazards, equipment, occupancy, and operational requirements of each environment to help protect people, property, and critical systems.
Solutions may include:
- Fire detection and alarm systems for terminals, stations, tunnels, and service facilities
- Specialized suppression systems for electrical equipment, machinery, and areas with flammable liquids
- Gas detection and monitoring for environments where toxic or flammable gases may be present
- Protection for electrical rooms, control rooms, mechanical spaces, and critical infrastructure
- Fire protection solutions tailored to vehicle maintenance, charging, and other operational hazards

Proven Expertise Across Transportation Infrastructure
Transportation infrastructure requires fire protection solutions that account for varied building configurations, operating conditions, and life-safety requirements. Viking Fire Protection applies its fire protection expertise to the needs of complex facilities, helping customers identify hazards and select solutions suited to their applications.
FireFlex® ICAF Compressed Air Foam System
For transportation facilities where flammable liquids may present a fire hazard, the FireFlex® ICAF compressed air foam system offers an additional suppression option. The FM Approved, deluge-type system is designed to address Class B pool, spill, and cascading fires. Its application may be appropriate for specific high-hazard areas, depending on the fire scenario, system design, and applicable requirements.

OUR SUCCESSFUL PROJECTS
We have the right solution for your project!
Ottawa LRT – Trillium Line Stations
Ottawa LRT Trillium Line Stations form part of the city’s expanding light rail network, supporting efficient transit across the region. The project includes multiple stations and supporting facilities designed to improve passenger flow, enhance reliability, and strengthen overall transportation capacity for the city.
Viking Fire Protection provided selective wet and dry sprinkler protection along with standpipe systems for 13 stations, including the maintenance facility. The team also supplied and installed Novec 1230 systems for all communication and electronics rooms to protect critical infrastructure and support continuous system operation.
Oliver Bowen Light Rail Vehicule Maintenance Facility
Located in northeast Calgary, the Oliver Bowen LRV Maintenance Facility offers inspection, maintenance and storage services for LRVs (light rail vehicles), better known in Calgary as CTrains. This type of transport serves over thirty stations in downtown Calgary and the surrounding area. The LRVs and the new facility are the property of Calgary Transit. It is worth mentioning that this project meets the LEED® Canada Silver certification.
