Maurice Lareau En

A Pillar of the Company and the Industry

After 44 years of dedication, passion and leadership at Viking, Maurice Lareau is beginning a well-deserved new chapter: retirement. A defining figure within the company and a respected pillar of the fire protection industry, Maurice leaves behind a profound legacy. One that is professional and deeply inspiring.

Maurice joined Viking in 1981. At that time, the company had not yet reached the scale it enjoys today. Yet even then, Maurice saw further. Year after year, he helped build, structure and grow the organization while remaining guided by his core values of rigor, respect and collaboration.

A Remarkable Career Defined by Versatility and Growth

Throughout his career, Maurice held numerous key roles: designer, engineering manager, superintendent, operations director, regional director and later vice-president. Each stage reflects not only his versatility, but also his ability to meet increasingly complex challenges.

He contributed to major projects in Quebec, across Canada and internationally, including:

  • Hydroelectric generating stations
  • Industrial and special projects
  • Prefabricated building systems
  • Projects across Alberta
  • The Alma plant
  • Interquisa (Terapthalic acid plant in Montreal)
  • The McInnis Cement Plant, a landmark project for Viking
  • An international nuclear facility project in Romania coordinated remotely
  • Large-scale projects requiring complex organization and logistics

He monitored project progress closely, ensured operational continuity and successfully navigated evolving project requirements.

A Leader Driven by Complex Challenges

If there is one trait that defined Maurice, it was his ease with complex projects. The more a situation required reflection, vision and creativity, the more it energized him.

He anticipated challenges before they arose, navigated change with confidence, and maintained direction when others felt uncertainty.

Calm under pressure and equipped with a sharp analytical mind, Maurice consistently found solutions where others saw obstacles. His foresight allowed projects to move forward with clarity and confidence.

“On job sites, I was impressed by his attention to detail; he could spot strengths, gaps, or improvements instantly. Walking alongside him, I learned the trade’s technical language—Maurice is an excellent communicator.”  Line Ménard – Polygon Group President

A Builder of Viking’s Growth and Culture and a respected Mentor

Maurice did not simply contribute to Viking’s evolution, he helped build it. He played a key role in structuring operations, improving internal communications through regular meetings, and opening communication channels that strengthened collaboration across teams. His leadership contributed to the transformation of several departments in Saint-Laurent, including the implementation of improved processes and operational practices. He fostered a strong sense of belonging and encouraged employees to see themselves as part of one unified team.

“A tireless worker, loyal and respectful of others, a man who never settles for mediocrity. His high standards lift everyone around him. Decisions were made, and things moved forward.” – Robert Lapierre, former VP, Viking Fire Protection

Beyond his technical expertise, it is the leader behind the professional that we celebrate today.

Maurice was a mentor and a builder. He took the time to listen, guide and share his knowledge. He also recognized potential in others and identified emerging leaders.

A Man of Integrity and High Standards

Maurice was relentless in his efforts and always aimed for excellence. He consistently raised the bar and elevated standards. Recognized for his loyalty, strong sense of duty and respect for others, he built lasting trust throughout the organization. Respected by both field teams and leadership, he brought people together, built consensus and created common ground. His loyalty to Viking and his colleagues is often described as unwavering.

A Leader Who Inspired Trust

Maurice listened to everything, understood everything, and kept projects moving forward with precision. He built a climate of trust with clients, contractors, and partners. His ability to surround himself with the right people, recognize potential in others, and support his teams helped retain experienced employees and strengthened the organization as a whole.

He surrounded himself with strong fire protection professionals who were fully committed to the company’s success, notably forming a brilliant group of long-time Viking members with Michel Godin, Claude Labonté, and Serge Paquette.

A Key Contributor to the Industry

Deeply involved in the development and recognition of the trade, Maurice played an active role in the evolution of the industry.

He notably:

  • Participated in central and sector-based committees

  • Contributed to negotiations at the provincial level

  • Supported worker training and professional development

  • Represented contractors before government authorities

  • Represented Viking at the CMEICI
  • Helped maintain and improve industry training standards

  • Contributed to the recognition of the trade and the protection of the role of fire protection mechanics

He firmly believed in the importance of knowledge transfer and ensuring the long-term continuity of expertise.

A Man Who Moved Things Forward

When he committed to something, he followed through thoroughly. He brought teams together, advanced projects, and enabled Viking to progress at the right pace. His consistency, strength, and vision contributed to the company’s stability and growth.

Although he officially retired on December 31, Maurice will continue supporting the organization as a consultant, particularly on special projects. A natural way to extend his involvement and continue sharing his valuable expertise.

A Well-Earned Retirement

We wish Maurice a retirement that reflects the magnitude of his contribution, filled with travel, discovery, meaningful moments, and perhaps even more time to refine his golf game.
